I’m Maggie Russell.
I’m a story hound. I help entrepreneurs, academics, nonprofits, and emerging writers shape complex ideas into writing that feels clear, engaging, and deeply human. Sometimes that means crafting original copy from the ground up. Sometimes it means working with the ingredients already on the table — refining structure, sharpening language, and helping a project find its voice.
As a former lawyer and nonprofit lobbyist, I’m comfortable working inside complexity. I like untangling dense information, finding patterns in seeming chaos, and building content that helps readers connect to ideas they might otherwise overlook. My approach is both strategic and collaborative: I work alongside clients to create writing that sounds like them, only clearer, stronger, and more intentional.
My creative work has been nominated for a Best of the Net and a Pushcart Prize, and I regularly work with literary magazines and poetry contests in selecting submissions for publication and awards. That editorial background informs the way I approach every project: with curiosity, close attention, and respect for the writer’s voice.
My communications and content strategy work has also received recognition from the American Society of Association Executives through a Gold Circle Award for a major overhaul of an association’s content plan that streamlined communication and improved clarity.
For the last decade, I’ve collaborated with businesses, academics, and nonprofits on content designed to last. I specialize in thoughtful, evergreen writing for highly regulated and technical industries, including finance and insurance. My work includes blog posts, newsletters, white papers, and campaign materials, with attention to SEO strategy, audience trust, and cross-channel communication.
I also work closely with writers and researchers on copyediting and developmental support for journal articles, essays, and long-form projects. Whether a draft needs delicate line editing or broader structural guidance, I aim to make the process feel collaborative rather than corrective.
If you have an idea, a messy draft, or a project that feels difficult to untangle, reach out and start a conversation .
