I’m Maggie Russell.

I’m always searching for stories. Sometimes I find them in courthouses. Sometimes I find them in the woods. I have a background in history (Oberlin College) and advocacy (Emory Law School). I’m also a former lawyer and nonprofit lobbyist. My past work in public relations and law now shapes how I dig into narratives to provide content. I bring that to my creative nonfiction and to my freelance content writing.

My work on business newsletters has won commendations from associations dedicated to communication. In 2000, I received praise from the American Society of Association Executives in their Gold Circle Award for a major overhaul of an association’s content plan. I’ve built on that success with larger projects since then.

My creative work is notable too. My essay “It Will Be Like This Forever” is a 2025 Best of the Net nominee. I have also recently received an Honorable Mention for the 2025 Spring Short Competition by The Prose Poem. I volunteer with programs that teach writing in prisons and community colleges. I am also a reader for upcoming literary magazine Broad Ripple Review among others.

For the last decade, I’ve worked with academics and businesses on a wide variety of projects. I've helped create content for B2B businesses in highly regulated industries, including the financial and insurance-related arenas. I've also worked with nonprofits on creating content for capital or major gift campaigns. With an eye towards maximizing cross channel opportunities, I focus on SEO optimization, ad words management, and market research. I provide content creation and strategy implementation. This includes blog posts, newsletters and white papers (or eBooks) with a goal of increasing warm leads and driving marketing goals.

I bring my experience as a former corporate attorney and litigator to cover financial and regulatory news in a way business folks can understand. My experience helps me track legislative and legal trends to keep readers informed and prepared for upcoming compliance changes.

I work with writers on copyediting and proofreading their journal articles, white papers, and essays.

Much of my work doesn’t have my name on it. When I ghostwrite, I sometimes even include an ironclad NDA that I draft. Why do that? Because contracts are construed against the drafter. It means, I take extra steps to protect the people who hire me.
