I’m Maggie Russell.
I’m a story hound. I am deeply committed to the civic role of narrative in all of its forms. As a former lawyer and nonprofit lobbyist, I’m comfortable working inside complexity.
As an editor, I untangle dense information, find patterns in chaos, and build content that connects readers to ideas they might otherwise overlook. I help nonprofits and emerging writers shape complex ideas into writing that feels clear, engaging, and deeply human. Sometimes that means crafting original copy from the ground up. Sometimes it means working with the ingredients already on the table — refining structure, sharpening language, and helping a project find its voice.
As a book reviewer, I am passionate about the civic elements of critique and books that respond to the impact of polarization on communities. This interest draws me to work that highlights metaphor and narrative and the genres that best allow for those elements, specifically, poetry, memoir, hybrid forms, translation, and essay.
My communications and content strategy work has also received recognition from the American Society of Association Executives through a Gold Circle Award for a major overhaul of an association’s content plan that streamlined communication and improved clarity.
My creative work has been nominated for a Best of the Net and a Pushcart Prize, and I regularly work with literary magazines and poetry contests in selecting submissions for publication and awards. That editorial background informs the way I approach every project: with curiosity, close attention, and respect for the writer’s voice.
